What's new
This page lists what has changed in the route planner and the route film, newest version first.
Version 4.7.0 · 21 October 2026: Plan worldwide, Garmin export, weather warnings, motorcycle bans
Routes worldwide (Route planner)
The planner now calculates motorcycle routes on every continent, not just Europe. Fuel stations, places to stay, sights and weather are worldwide too. For every country on the route it shows driving side, helmet law, driving licence and the link to the official travel advice. Tolls, ferries, pass closures and motorcycle bans still only exist where we have checked them.
Border crossings, Carnet de Passages and documents (Route planner)
If your route crosses a border outside the Schengen area, the planner tells you what you need for your motorcycle: passport, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, green card or border insurance and, where required, the Carnet de Passages. The Carnet information is checked against the TCS country pages; where they differ, the TCS counts. Also in the roadbook.
GPX for Garmin Zumo and BMW Navigator (Route planner)
New export: one route per day, your waypoints as announced via points plus shaping points along our line, so the sat nav stays on the planned route when it recalculates. Long days are split into several routes.
Compare riding styles and find twisty roads (Route planner)
One click calculates the same tour in all four riding styles and shows riding time, bends, motorway, climbing and gravel side by side. The new map layer "Twisty roads" colours twisty roads yellow and very twisty ones red, before you even plan.
Weather warnings along the whole route (Route planner)
The weather now appears by itself, about every 25 kilometres and on every pass, with the temperature at road altitude. Snow, thunderstorms, ice, rain, gales, fog and heat appear as a warning at the top.
Fuel by opening hours, rest days (Route planner)
Fuel stations that are closed when you arrive no longer count for the fuel range. On multi-day tours you add rest days; dates, weather, roadbook and Booking links move along.
Motorcycle bans and rules per country (Route planner)
The planner knows roads closed to motorcycles, such as Kesselberg, Sudelfeld, Schauinsland and the Elmstein valley, and checks whether the ban applies when you pass. For more than 20 countries it lists what you must carry or wear and what applies to motorcycles there.
Version 4.6.0 · 21 October 2026: Colours, symbols, map layers and better GPX import
Import GPX: as track or as route (Route planner)
If a file contains a recorded track, the planner asks how to import it. As a track the line stays exactly as recorded: nothing is re-routed, not even after a reload. As a route the planner keeps up to 50 waypoints, with the names from the file, and the router calculates the way between them again. The waypoints in the file are added as notes with name and symbol.
Switch several tracks on and off one by one (Route planner)
If a file has several tracks, they become days and appear in the "Route" tab with a tick box. You switch them on and off one by one, and clicking the name zooms to the track. Routes in the file that join tracks (such as "Section 7") are calculated by the router. Duplicate tracks, for example a complete track next to the daily stages, start switched off. The days are in riding order.
Colours for days, sections and road type (Route planner)
Every day stage now has its own colour on the map. You can change it: tap the colour dot on the stage, or click the line for a single section. With the colour button at the top left you can colour the line by road type instead: motorway, main road, country road, minor road, unpaved and ferry. Clicking the legend zooms to the next stretch of that type. This also works for imported and shared tracks. Red stays reserved for closures.
Symbols for waypoints, notes and places (Route planner)
Instead of dots the map now shows symbols: fuel station, restaurant, accommodation, viewpoint and more for the places along the route. Notes and waypoints get a symbol and a colour of your choice, with 16 symbols to pick from. You set your own points as a note, right-click or long press on the map.
More map layers and better handling (Route planner)
At the top right, under "Map layers", you choose between ten maps plus Topographic and add terrain shading as well as cycling, MTB and hiking routes. There are also zoom buttons with a compass, Esc and X to close windows on the map, and the jump to the stage when you click a day. Long tours of 3000 km stay usable.
Version 4.5.0 · 21 October 2026: Tolls, ferries, 32 countries and easier handling
Feedback in the route film (Route film)
The route film now has the "Send feedback or report a bug" button, just like the route planner. It opens your mail app with the version and browser already filled in. A link also leads straight to "Request a feature".
Request a feature and vote (Route planner, Route film)
The route planner and the route film each have a page where you can request a feature. I check every request and then publish it; everyone can vote for it with one click. At the top are the requests I am working on, then the planned ones and the open ones with the most votes. For follow-up questions I need your email address when you submit; it stays invisible and is deleted later. Voting only uses a random code from your browser, no IP address and no name.
The map starts at your location (Route planner)
Without a loaded tour the planner opens the map where you are, if your browser allows it. The "My location" button at the top left jumps back at any time. A round trip starts at the first waypoint, otherwise at the centre of the map, so at first at your location. Your location stays in the browser and is not stored.
"Fast" allows motorways (Route planner)
The style was called "Quick, but no motorways", and the "Motorways" tick under "Avoid" was set, so "Fast" was not fast. Now the planner switches the tick off when you pick "Fast" and on again when you change to another style. You can change it yourself at any time.
Special tolls and a link to buy (Route planner)
If the route uses a section with its own toll, the planner names it and links the operator, for example Brenner, the Tauern and Arlberg tunnels, Grossglockner, Timmelsjoch or the Mont Blanc and Fréjus tunnels. You buy vignettes for Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and Hungary in advance online through a direct link, so you do not have to pay on the way. The planner does not state prices for the special tolls.
"Near your route" notes (Route planner)
For spots the planner cannot recognise with certainty there is a note with an explanation: Great St Bernard tunnel (toll tunnel, free pass road), Munt la Schera tunnel, Silvretta High Alpine Road (expected to stay closed until 2030 on the Vorarlberg side), Gerlos Alpine Road and Rossfeld Panoramic Road.
Telepass in Italy (Route planner)
For motorways in Italy a note explains the Telepass toll box: you drive through the lane without stopping and pay later. Tourists can order a box too. On a motorcycle it needs a clear line of sight to the barrier, and riders report it is recognised less often there. Keep a ticket or card ready.
Noise ban in Tyrol (Route planner)
In the districts of Reutte and Imst motorcycles with more than 95 dB(A) stationary noise are banned from 15 April to 31 October, foreign ones too. This applies to the Lech valley road, the Tannheim road, the road Berwang–Namlos, the Bschlabs road and the Hahntennjoch road. If your route uses one of them, a note points to the registration document (field U.1) and links the Province of Tyrol. The planner does not know your motorcycle and checks nothing.
Ferries on the route (Route planner)
The planner lists every ferry with the kilometre and the length of the crossing. Many ferries only run at certain times, some only a few times a day or seasonally, so a note about the timetable comes with it. For Norway a link leads to the journey planner Entur, for Croatia to Jadrolinija. Also in the roadbook.
32 countries instead of 15 (Route planner)
The notes on tolls, vignettes and low emission zones now also cover Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, the United Kingdom and Ireland. They are based on ADAC and travel guides; check them with the official sites before you ride.
Routes up to the North Cape (Route planner)
The routing data now also reaches across northern Norway to the North Cape and Finnmark.
Easier to use (Route planner)
A click on a sight or a pass in the list zooms there and shows the spot on the map with a ring and its name, even when a town has several hits. A right-click on a waypoint (on a phone: long press) offers "Remove", break and overnight stay. The guide now explains how the share of bends is calculated and why it comes out too low for GPX files with few points.
Version 4.4.1 · 20 October 2026: Closures in English
Closure texts translated (Route planner)
The texts of the closures ("Closed", "Roadworks", "Bridge closed" …) now appear in English in the English planner and roadbook. Street and place names stay as the data source delivers them.
New preview image on the home page (Route planner)
The route planner teaser shows the current sidebar with key figures, riding styles and elevation profile.
Version 4.4.0 · 20 October 2026: Roadbook, toll notes and guides
Printable roadbook (Route planner)
In the "Tours" tab there are "Roadbook A4" and "Roadbook tank bag" (A5 portrait, large type). It contains key figures, map, elevation profile, stages with sunrise and sunset and a ride list with times: waypoints, passes, closures, fuel stops including gaps, notes, weather, sights and straight-line and gravel sections. Print it or save it as PDF. Speed camera locations are left out on purpose.
Notes on tolls, vignettes and low emission zones (Route planner)
In the "On the way" tab and in the roadbook you see what applies to motorcycles in the countries on your route: vignette with prices and link, distance tolls, special tolls in Austria, low emission zones like Crit'Air in France, ZTL in Italy or Milan Area B. Every note has an as-of date. They are notes, not legal advice.
Avoid per section (Route planner)
In the menu of a section (click on the line) you switch motorways, tolls, ferries and unpaved roads for that section separately. If a setting is missing, the tour's setting applies.
Notes on the map (Route planner)
Right-click on the map (on a phone: long press) and "Note here": text up to 120 characters and a type, for example fuel, food, photo stop or caution. Notes show on the map, in the roadbook, as GPX waypoints and in the share link.
Key figures and round trip by riding time (Route planner)
Above the tabs there are six key figures: distance, riding time, ascent, share unpaved, share of bends and number of passes. A round trip can be generated by riding time from 1 to 10 hours instead of by kilometres.
Guides of their own (Route planner, Route film)
The route planner and the route film each have their own guide, also in English, reachable with the "?" button.
Feedback with a button (Route planner)
In the planner "Send feedback or report a bug" opens a prefilled email with version, browser and a link to the tour. You may delete the details before sending.
More room in the sidebar (Route planner)
The key figures are now one slim row. The closure warning, "How it works" and the coffee box scroll along. The closure list can be folded.
Version 4.3.0 · 19 October 2026: Sections your way and avoiding spots
Click on the line (Route planner)
A click on the route (on a phone: a short tap) opens a menu for that section. "Straight line" draws a line without routing, suitable for ferries, car trains or paths the planner does not know. You can also pick your own riding style for that section only. If the planner cannot calculate a section, one click on straight line completes the tour.
Avoid spots (Route planner)
"Avoid this spot" in the section menu and "Don't ride through here" with a right-click on the map recalculate the route around the spot. Avoided spots appear as red dots and in a list with "Allow again", and they are part of share links and saved tours.
Wider sidebar (Route planner)
On a computer you drag the sidebar wider or narrower at its right edge (300 to 720 pixels). The browser remembers the width.
Version 4.2.0 · 19 October 2026: Buy me a coffee and more room
Buy me a coffee (Route planner, Route film)
In the route planner and the route film there is a small box with a link to PayPal; the amount is up to you. It is only a link: as long as nobody clicks, PayPal learns nothing, and there are no cookies.
Fold the boxes (Route planner)
The coffee box and the "How it works" help in the planner can be folded. The browser remembers it.
Version 4.1.0 · 19 October 2026: Planning multi-day tours
Daily stages by riding time (Route planner)
Besides the daily distance in kilometres there is "Riding time per day". Whichever limit comes first applies: 300 km of motorway are quickly ridden, 150 km over passes are not. If it gets too much, the planner suggests places to stay just before.
Plan breaks (Route planner)
A waypoint becomes a break with "Break here", 15 to 90 minutes long. Restaurants, viewpoints and sights can be inserted directly as a break. Breaks are part of share links and saved tours.
Arrival time for every day (Route planner)
Every day shows roughly when you arrive: departure plus riding time plus breaks. The weather forecast along the way takes the breaks into account.
Accommodation with one click (Route planner)
Right-click on the map (on a phone: long press) and "Find accommodation here": hotels, huts and campsites within 5 km with website, Booking link for the right night and "Stay here". Nothing goes to Booking before you click the link.
Sights along the route (Route planner)
Castles, waterfalls, dams, viewpoints and monuments up to 15 km off the route, museums up to 3 km, each with a Wikipedia link and a "Insert as break" button. Only well-known places, so the list stays clear.
Tidier (Route planner)
"Load GPX" now sits at the start in the "Route" tab. The last tab is called "Tours" and holds export, your own tours and the R&R Signature Tracks.
A multi-day tour as one film (Route film)
If you load several GPX files, one per riding day, you get one scene per day. "All scenes in one video" is on from the start. Titles like "Day 1 – Furka" create interstitials.
Settings for all scenes (Route film)
New scenes take over look and camera. The "Apply to all scenes" button copies one scene's setting to all others with one click, undo with Ctrl+Z.
Version 4.0.0 · 19 October 2026: First numbered version
R&R Signature Tracks (Route planner)
Published tours have an overview page and a page each with a preview image, in German and English. In the planner there is a "Signature Tracks" tab for them.
Alpine passes (Route planner)
A page of its own with 43 passes, each with height and current closure status, and a link into the planner.
GPX import 1:1 and sharing a track (Route planner)
An imported track stays unchanged, with the heights from the file and also for multi-day tours. A track can be shared with others by link.
Click closures and ride around them (Route planner)
Closures are in a clickable list and in red on the map. "Avoid" recalculates the route around the closure, automatically if you like.
More options in the route film (Route film)
HEIC photos work in every browser. Day colours and a "Day n" sign structure multi-day tours. The camera can be set calmer, and at the end it zooms out to route, region, country or Europe. The start page loads faster.
