Version 5.0 is here. The biggest step: you can now sign up for free, and your tours and films are available on all your devices. There are also new vehicles, a curviness slider and a few tools testers asked for. The planner and the film maker still work without signing in.
Route Planner
- An account for your tours: Sign in with a passkey or an email link, and your tours, imported tracks and settings are ready on every device. Free, up to 100 tours and 50 MB. If you do not sign in, you work in the browser as before. How the account works
- Vehicles: Motorcycle, 125cc, moped, mountain bike, trekking bike, car and off-roader. The planner picks the matching routing and speed. The 125cc avoids motorways, the off-roader looks for tracks.
- Curviness slider (beta): Five levels from “Fast” to “Very twisty”. On the upper levels the planner compares several variants per section and takes the twistiest one that stays within your length limit.
- More accurate riding time: I calibrated the times against my own rides on the Africa Twin. On country roads the median error was 14 per cent before and is now a little over 6.
- Coordinates in search: Type coordinates, in decimal degrees or degrees, minutes and seconds, and the planner places the point there.
- A click adds to the end: A click on the map extends the route at the end, like drawing a track. In the middle of the route, add a waypoint with a right-click.
- “No road” with an explanation: If the planner finds no way, it names the two points and the likely cause, such as a private road. “Section as straight line” bridges the spot.
- GPX tools: Thin, repair, trim, split and merge tracks, add times and fill in elevations, in the planner and in the Route Film.
- Embed a route: Map, elevation profile or key figures of your route can be embedded on your own website.
- Ferries: The router includes the crossing in the riding time. To the Route Planner
Route Film
- Camera cuts and orbiting: Part-way through the film you switch from “Follow the line” to orbiting the tip, with a smooth transition.
- Plan in the planner: If you prefer to type your stops as place names, plan in the planner and carry the route into the film. The guide shows the way from trip plan to film in ten minutes.
- Embed a film: Finished films can be embedded in a website with a code.
- Many scenes: From six scenes on there is a selection list instead of a long row of buttons, handy for tours of several weeks.
- More file formats: Besides GPX the film now reads FIT and NMEA. Photos without GPS can be placed on the track with a time correction. To the Route Film
Your feedback counts
Many of these features come from community wishes and tests, for example the coordinate search and the better error message. If something is missing, add it on the wishes page and others can vote for it. To the wishes
