Ride & Reflect recently got a version number, and with 4.3 the route planner and the Route Film have come a good deal further: from planning each day with breaks to a film of a whole trip. Everything is free and needs no account.

Route planner

  • R&R Signature Tracks: Tours I have ridden myself and happily recommend. Two tours in the Vosges to start with, more to follow. Open each one in the route planner, adjust it, save it as GPX for your sat nav or turn it into a Route Film. To the Signature Tracks
  • Alpine passes: 43 passes in Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France and Germany with height, country and the current closure status. Closed passes are marked in red, and one click opens the pass in the route planner. To the passes
  • Avoiding closures: The route planner lists closed roads and shows them on the map. One click on “Avoid” recalculates the route, and if you like it does so automatically.
  • Daily stages by distance and riding time: Besides the daily distance you can set the riding time per day; whichever limit comes first counts. 300 km of motorway go by quickly, 150 km over passes do not.
  • Plan breaks and see your arrival time: One click turns any stop into a break of 15 to 90 minutes. Each day then shows roughly when you arrive, breaks included.
  • Find a place to stay with one click: Right-click the map (on a phone: long press), then “Find accommodation here”. You see hotels, huts and campsites within 5 km, with their website and a Booking link for the right night.
  • Worth seeing along the route: Castles, waterfalls, dams and viewpoints up to 15 km from the route, each with a Wikipedia link. One click adds the place to your route as a break.
  • Sections your way: Clicking the route opens a menu for that stretch. “Straight line” draws a direct line, for example for a ferry, a car train or a track the planner does not know. Or pick a different riding style for just this section, such as “Extra twisty”.
  • Avoid spots: Rule out a road you don't want to ride with “Avoid this spot” or right-click “Don't ride through here”. The planner recalculates the route around it.
  • Your own GPX tracks 1:1: A loaded track stays exactly as it is in the file, multi-day tours included. “Share” sends it on as a link. To the route planner

Route Film

  • A multi-day tour as one film: Load several GPX files and each day becomes a scene; the export joins them into a single film. Set camera and look once and apply them to every day with one click.
  • Day colours: On multi-day tours each day gets its own colour, and “Day 2” appears when the day starts.
  • Photos and camera: Photos in HEIC format load in every browser. The camera can be made calmer, and at the end the film can zoom out to the region, the country or all of Europe. To the Route Film

Wanted: videos from DJI and GoPro

For the Route Film to read the GPS data from DJI and GoPro videos in future, I need sample files. I am looking for original videos straight from the camera with GPS switched on. Short clips are enough, it is the data that counts. Please get in touch.
