On the Route des Grandes Alpes you climb well above 2,000 metres several times. Up there it can get bitterly cold even in summer, and the weather often changes faster than in the valley.

Prepared for altitude

  • Pack layers: A warm mid-layer and rain gear belong in your luggage, even when the valley is sunny.
  • Check the weather: Look at the forecast for the passes in the morning and at midday, not just for your destination.
  • Listen to your body: Altitude and cold make you tired. Plan deliberate breaks at the summits.
