Riding slowly in a straight line is the first step. The second: slow circles. This is where vision, balance and feel for the clutch and rear brake come together – and you immediately notice where tension sits.

The circle exercise

  • Start big: On an empty car park, ride a large circle at walking pace and gradually make it smaller.
  • Look into the circle: Look to where you'll be in half a lap, not at the ground.
  • Both directions: Practise clockwise and anticlockwise. Your weaker side tells you a lot.

If you stay calm at low speed, you stay calm everywhere. If you hit inner limits, my Focus Sessions start right there.
