Not every wet road is equally slippery. Rough tarmac offers surprisingly good grip even in the rain, while markings, tar strips and leaves become slide traps. If you can read the surface, you brake more calmly.

Reading the surface

  • Avoid shiny patches: Anything that reflects the light is usually especially slippery.
  • Choose your braking point: Brake on grippy tarmac where possible, not on markings or covers.
  • The first minutes of rain: When it just starts raining, dirt lifts and makes the road particularly slippery.

Braking technique is best trained on a recognised rider safety course. For the mental side, you'll find suitable coaching offers here.
