After a long tour your head is full. Bends, passes, that one moment on the Grimsel when the clouds broke open. Two days later much of it has already faded. That is exactly why it pays to ride the route a second time – this time on the map: your GPX file becomes an animated map video.
Reflect instead of just ticking it off
Ride & Reflect is about riding consciously and making sense of what you experienced. Looking back at your tour shows you things that get lost in the saddle: Where was I relaxed? Where did I tense up? Which section was longer than it felt?
How to turn a GPX file into a video
That is what the Route Film is for – a free tool right here on the website. All you need is a GPX file of your tour; the route then draws itself as a line across the map, over 3D terrain and aerial imagery if you like.
- Load the GPX file or draw the route point by point. Several tracks can be joined into one route.
- Pick the look: map theme, 3D terrain, line colour, optionally an elevation profile.
- Add signs: label passes, towns and stops – they appear as the line passes by.
- Camera and legs: follow the line or move from one view to the next; speed, breaks and mode of transport per section, for example the ferry or the car train.
- Export as MP4: 1080p, 2K or 4K, landscape for YouTube or portrait for Instagram and Reels.
Where do I get the GPX file?
GPX is the standard format of almost every sat nav, sports watch and touring app. Menu names change from time to time; what you are looking for is always “GPX”:
- Strava: open the activity in your browser, “…” menu, “Export GPX”.
- Komoot: open the tour on komoot.com and download it as GPX.
- Garmin Connect: open the activity, gear icon, “Export to GPX”.
- Sat nav or sports watch: copy the recording via USB; export a FIT file as GPX in the manufacturer’s app first.
Example: Andermatt – Furka – Grimsel – Innertkirchen
The example video on the home page shows a classic of Central Switzerland: from Andermatt over the Furka Pass into the Goms valley and over the Grimsel Pass down to Innertkirchen. The Route Film also offers ready-made templates for other mountain passes.
Not just for motorcycle tours
Any GPX file works: a bike or gravel ride, a hike, a road trip or a journey with several modes of transport. You choose the mode of transport per leg.
Your data stays with you
The Route Film runs entirely in your browser. Your GPX files, photos, projects and videos are not uploaded – not even to us. You don't need an account. You may use the videos freely as long as the map credit stays visible.
Give it a try
It's most comfortable on a computer with Chrome, Edge or Safari; on tablet and smartphone it works by touch. Take your last tour, load the GPX file and watch it again – with a little distance, you often ride a quite different route.
